On June 29, 2024, amidst the warm breeze by the River Tyne, a delegation from Durham Chinese School, including Head Teacher Mr Haoyang Liu, Head of Academic Affairs Dr Jingyun Wang, and Year 5 Teacher Mr Jiarui Yu, along with Dr Xinyi Chi from the Wuhan University Tea Culture Centre, visited the UK Association for the Promotion of Chinese Education (UKAPCE) in Newcastle. They met with UKAPCE President Mr Shanxiong Wu and Vice President Ms. Yi Shao to discuss the future direction of Chinese language education in the UK.

On Qingming Festival 2023, representatives from Chinese schools and community groups in the UK visited St. John’s Cemetery in Newcastle to commemorate five Chinese sailors who passed away in the 19th century, in a gesture of historical remembrance and cultural reflection.

癸卯年纽卡斯尔清明祀水兵记
2023年清明节，英国多所中文学校与社团代表前往纽卡斯尔，缅怀19世纪末在当地病故的中国水兵，表达追思之情。

On the afternoon of February 11, 2023, Head Teacher Mr Haoyang Liu of Durham Chinese School, accompanied by several teachers and volunteers, paid a New Year visit to Mr Shanxiong Wu, President of the UK Association for Chinese Language Education. The two sides had in-depth discussions on the future of Chinese education in the UK, focusing on the Association’s recent core initiatives, including efforts to standardize the Chinese curriculum and unify Chinese language testing practices across institutions. The meeting fostered greater collaboration and laid a solid foundation for improving the quality of Chinese education nationwide.

Professor Hongjian Sun is our former Secretary-General of Durham Chinese School. As a distinguished academic teaching at Durham University, Professor Sun has long dedicated himself to the non-profit cause of Chinese language education. From his role on the Executive Committee to his continued support as a passionate parent, he exemplifies the professional excellence and selfless spirit of the Chinese education team.

Following three years of the pandemic, Durham Chinese School fully resumed in-person classes during the 2022-2023 academic year, with revitalised spirits among students and teachers and a vibrant academic atmosphere. As Chinese New Year’s Eve approached, the school, in collaboration with Durham County Council and Durham University, co-organized a grand Chinese New Year celebration on January 21st at Durham Town Hall. The event marked the school’s renewed vitality and showcased its active integration with the local mainstream society.

在经历了三年疫情后，杜伦中文学校于2022-2023学年全面恢复线下教学，师生精神焕发，学术氛围浓厚。时值除夕，学校与杜伦郡政府及杜伦大学等机构携手，于1月21日在杜伦市市政大厅共同举办了盛大的中国农历新年庆祝活动。活动标志着学校的活力重现，并展现了其与本地主流社会深度融合的积极姿态。

As winter gives way to spring and a hundred flowers bloom, the joyous Lunar New Year celebrations have concluded. In this online event, organized by Durham County Council, dedicated volunteers from Durham Chinese School, together with students from the Durham University Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA), broadcast a vibrant array of Chinese New Year programs to various public schools across Durham County. These initiatives brought warmth and care to children in frontline worker families and helped them learn about Chinese culture.

2021杜伦中文学校新春活动回顾
冬去春来，百花盛开，喜庆的新春活动也告一段落了。在本次由杜伦郡政府组织的线上活动中，杜伦中文学校热心的志愿者和杜伦大学中国学生学者联谊会的同学们一道，为杜伦郡多所公立学校的孩子们播出了丰富多彩的春节节目。这些节目为许多一线工作者家庭的孩子们带去了关怀，并帮助他们学习了中华文化。

From our initial encounter with Durham Chinese School, to jointly learning the first Chinese lesson with the children, and then witnessing the school’s efforts for the community during challenging times, we have increasingly identified with Durham Chinese School’s philosophy. The school has also imbued our lives with profound meaning. Whenever we hear students praise the fun of Chinese characters, we feel immense pride; whenever we see Chinese characters being acquired by students one by one, we are filled with delightful surprise. This unique sense of appreciation is what Durham Chinese School has given us, and it is also the generous gift bestowed by the experience of learning Chinese.

In June 2020, our substitute teacher, Miss Yizhuo Ma, proudly represented Durham Chinese School in The First Global Micro-lecture Competition of Overseas Chinese Teaching and secured an excellent Second Prize!

In early March 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic began to spread in the UK, protective items like masks and gloves quickly became essential for Chinese residents and students staying in the country. Many faced anxiety over the dwindling supply of these crucial items. Amidst this concern, the community ensured no one was forgotten. Vital supplies, aided by the Chinese Consulate General in Manchester, the UK Association for the Promotion of Chinese Education, and the North England Chinese Entrepreneurs Association, reached many Chinese residents and students in need, bringing significant comfort to the Durham Chinese community.

杜伦中文学校防疫物资发放纪实
2020年三月上旬，新冠疫情在英国爆发。对于留在英国坚持防疫的广大华人华侨和留学生来说，口罩与手套成为生活的刚需。多一个口罩便少一分危险，多一双手套便多一分安全。人们小心翼翼维持疫情下的生活，为或多或少短缺的物资颦蹙。临窗而望，平川绿野却已春意盎然。然而，每一位华人华侨和留学生都不会被同胞忘记。中国驻曼彻斯特总领事馆，英国中文教育促进会和英国北部华人企业家协会援助的物资随着闹枝头的春意被送至许多需要帮助的华侨及留学生手中。

Though we couldn’t directly fight on the front lines, our hearts were always with those affected in Wuhan. Facing this global health crisis, the Chinese community, upholding the spirit of collective support – “when one is in trouble, help comes from all sides” – contributed our utmost. Even while living overseas, a deep sense of shared humanity and care remained strong within our hearts. We firmly believe that through unity and collective effort, this challenging period will be overcome, and brighter days will surely arrive.

虽然我们没有能力奋战一线，但是，我们的心始终与武汉同在。面对本次疫情，我们广大海外同胞秉承“一方有难，八方支援”的精神为抗击疫情贡献一份绵薄之力，即使身在海外，心中的中华情却依旧滚烫。面对疫情，中国人民众志成城，勠力同心，相信这场“战疫”一定能够取得圆满胜利，终会迎来春暖花开之日。

疫情当前，杜伦中文学校作为杜伦地区最大的中文学校，秉着对全体学生、家长、校职工的负责态度，决定延期开学。根据目前的疫情形势，学校在与家长进行有效商讨后，决定全面开展线上教学的课程，并于3月8日为同学开展了首次网课教学活动。

Even during the pandemic, Durham Chinese School remained dedicated to its core mission. We swiftly moved all our Chinese language and culture courses online, not only ensuring continuous learning for children interested in Chinese but also fostering a spirit of unity and resilience. Beyond our educational efforts, our community also mobilized significant support for those affected by the virus globally, including substantial donations to the NHS here in the UK. Guided by our cultural values, we believe in the collective strength to overcome any challenge, and our online courses have consistently kept our community connected and learning.

同呼吸共命运，我们一直都在
停课不停学，纵使疫情危难，杜伦中文学校也没有停止自己本职的工作，我们的课程仍在继续。教授中文汉字传播中华文化，不仅是为了让对中国感兴趣的孩子们学习中文认识汉字，更在于在这种特殊的危难时刻发扬中国精神的作用。除了教学工作，我们的社区也积极行动，为全球受疫情影响的人群，包括英国本地的NHS，提供了大量援助。 万众一心，众志成城，一方有难，八方资源……中华文化教育我们同呼吸共命运，相信团结的力量能使我们共同度过难关。杜伦中文课程一直在线上。

2020年2月1日下午，Westmill Foods英联食品子公司配合杜伦郡的中国新年庆祝活动，在市政厅举行了义卖活动。义卖活动由Westmill Foods 英国东北部和苏格兰区域经理王女士组织一些杜伦中文学校的热心家长和学生作为志愿者，为义卖无偿提供了丰富的物资，主要为中国传统调味料、大米、食用油等，为杜伦中文学校筹集资金。活动当天，义卖现场热闹非凡。中文学校的学生、家长及Westmill Foods部分员工们已经早早来到市政厅整理好义卖点的摊位，打出宣传的标语。活动在十点钟准时开始，下午四点左右结束，同学们各尽其责，认真与家长布置摊位，极力的推销自己的产品，引来来往人群的频频关注。学校的家长陈宝凤女士及女儿们，杜伦本地Sacriston 邮局负责人邵丹女士和女儿，还有杜伦大学的黎碧瑶老师一家，不辞辛苦热心的推销，并且详细讲解了食品的做法。活动整整持续了近六个小时，收入全部交与杜伦中文学校，用以开展一系列丰富多彩的活动。

Chinese New Year celebrations came to the centre of Durham on Saturday, 1st February. An annual event celebrating Chinese culture and arts in various forms, from traditional music & storytelling to even a giant dancing lion to welcome the Chinese Year of the Rat.

Durham Chinese school joins “Perfect Distance Training for Chinese Teachers” provided by Chinese Language and Culture Education Foundation of China.

Master Monk Haitao visited Durham City on Tuesday, 25th June.

He was greeted by the city Mayor, the Dean of the Durham Cathedra, the Chaplin of the Durham University, the manager of Durham Markets, and the Head Teacher of the Durham Chinese School.

Chinese New Year celebrations came to the centre of Durham on Saturday, 9th February. An annual event celebrating Chinese culture and arts in various forms, from traditional music & storytelling to even a giant dancing lion to welcome the Chinese the year of the Pig. The event which was made possible by Durham County Council with support from Durham University & CSSA, Durham Chinese School, Durham BID, Durham Markets was a massive success as hundreds of people turned out for a fantastic day of culture & entertainment despite the cold & damp February weather.

2019年杜伦新春庆祝活动
2月9日星期六，杜伦市中心迎来了中国新年庆祝活动。这项年度盛会以丰富多样的形式展现中华文化与艺术，包括传统音乐、故事讲述，以及巨型舞狮表演，共同迎接中国猪年的到来。本次活动由杜伦郡议会促成，并获得了杜伦大学、杜伦大学中国学生学者联谊会（CSSA）、杜伦中文学校、杜伦商业促进区（Durham BID）以及杜伦市场的大力支持。尽管2月天气寒冷潮湿，但仍吸引了数百人前来，享受了一场精彩的文化娱乐盛宴，取得了巨大成功。

Congratulations to GCSE students who achieved outstanding results!

Durham Chinese School students achieved outstanding results in the latest GCSE exams. All our GCSE candidates have achieved overall A* grade. We extend our sincere congratulations to our students and wish them doing even better in future.

Durham Chinese School provides tuition support for GCSE candidates, as well as teaching Chinese language and culture to children from age Five to Post-GCSE.

Followed the breath of the early summer and walked with the light footsteps, the students, parents and teachers of Durham Chinese School held the cheerful SPORT DAY in the Graham Sports Centre on 8th July 2018.

On this bright and crisp day, students had a good rest after the final examination through numerous games, such as sack race, egg spoon race, three-legged race, beanbag game, relay race and tug of war. Through these activities, students not only gained a deeper understanding of teamwork and the spirit of intense competition, but also had a good chance to interact closely with their parents.

The happy sports day finally ended in a pleasant atmosphere and its exciting scene still echoes in everybody’s mind.

Chinese schools headteachers in North England attended the conference at the Chinese Consulate in Manchester last month.
We discussed the future plans about how to standardise Chinese teaching in Overseas.

曼城领区中文学校召开“三化”研讨会
