Congratulations to Our Teacher Ma Yizhuo for Winning Second Prize in the Global Chinese Teaching Micro-lecture Competition
Authors: Yizhuo Ma, Shijing Zhu
In June 2020, Miss Yizhuo Ma, a substitute teacher from our school, represented Durham Chinese School in the First Global Micro-lecture Competition of Overseas Chinese Teaching and achieved an excellent Second Prize!

As the COVID-19 pandemic became severe in the UK, all courses at the Chinese school had already transitioned to online platforms. One of the competition’s aims was to adapt to the rapidly developing online learning methods. Especially during the pandemic, offline Chinese language teaching institutions worldwide almost came to a halt, making online teaching an increasingly urgent necessity. The First Global Chinese Teaching Micro-lecture Competition was jointly organized by Jinan University College of Chinese Language and Culture, Huaqiao University College of Chinese Language and Culture, and Hanbridge Online. Its goal was to vigorously promote the development of “Internet + Global Chinese Education,” optimize and enrich teaching methods through modern information technology, enhance teaching effectiveness, cultivate Chinese teachers’ digital teaching literacy, and promote the high-quality and efficient sustainable development of Chinese language education.
Due to the pandemic, various stages of this competition experienced appropriate delays. Since its commencement, over 500 contestants from 22 countries and regions enthusiastically registered, submitting nearly 400 entries. After intense competition in the preliminary and final rounds, and under the joint evaluation of industry experts and scholars, Ms. Yizhuo Ma’s entry, “Henry’s Railway Journey,” representing Durham Chinese School, achieved an excellent Second Prize in the individual category.
Teacher Ma Yizhuo’s Reflection
“This was a very meaningful online competition I participated in through Durham Chinese School. When the COVID-19 pandemic suddenly hit in 2020, all courses at Durham Chinese School were forced to move to online platforms. In the initial phase of online classes, both students and teachers went through a considerable period of exploration. We encountered various issues and unexpected situations, such as a lack of physical textbooks, sluggish online teaching platforms, and unfamiliarity with online platforms for both teachers and students. Ultimately, thanks to the efforts of teachers and the school committee, and the great cooperation from parents and students, online courses have been able to continue to this day. Both the online Chinese teaching during the pandemic and my participation in the micro-lecture competition hold extraordinary significance for me.
During this competition, I received strong support from Principal Haoyang Liu, who encouraged me to register and provided many insights and suggestions throughout the process. My many close friends and family members also offered much encouragement, support, and excellent advice. I sincerely thank everyone for their great support during my participation. I will continue to strive, dedicating my modest efforts in my spare time to Chinese language teaching and the dissemination of Chinese culture overseas.
Friends and teachers interested in this type of competition are welcome to consult me or discuss related questions anytime; I will spare no effort in sharing my experiences and insights. I hope to see more teachers and students from Durham Chinese School participate in future competitions, allowing Chinese culture to spread even better in the UK and in Durham.”
Conclusion and Best Wishes
On this occasion, we extend our gratitude to all staff members of Durham Chinese School for their hard work and to all students’ parents for their active participation. We sincerely wish everyone good health and academic achievements in the New Year! We also wish Durham Chinese School smooth activities and fruitful results in the coming year!
