Chess Club

Chinese chess (象棋 pronunciation: xiàng qí) is a very popular strategy board game in China. The game represents a battle between two armies, with the object of capturing the enemy’s general (king).
There are 16 pieces in each army including a general (将jiàng or帅 shuài),two advisors (士or仕shì), two ministers (象or 相xiàng), two horses (马 mǎ), two chariots (车 jū) two cannons (炮pào) and five soldiers (卒zú or 兵 bīng).
In the club, I will teach children the basic of the moves, rules, tactics and notation. Here are some golden rules (in Chinese) for the winning of the game:
兵贵神速
两翼齐飞
攻守兼顾
棋路畅通

Chinese Calligraphy
Tutor: Miss Xinyao Sun
Chinese calligraphy, also known as brush calligraphy, has been an important feature of the Chinese culture for more than 3000 years. It is an emotional form of art and our intangible culture heritage. It has been identified as one of the four critical standards for Chinese art treasures, which are musical instrument (Qin), strategic board game (Chess), calligraphy (Shu) and paint (Hua). In China, children will be encouraged to practice Chinese calligraphy since young, which is not only just to produce beautiful calligraphy works, but also to learn Chinese characters and discipline. It could also be an approach towards peaceful thinking.
中国书法是中华传统文化的艺术瑰宝,已有三千多年的悠久历史。在中国,学龄儿童通过练习毛笔字学习汉字、掌握书法技巧、感悟艺术、寄情书画。 她是很多人陶冶情操的良师益友。
Chinese Paper Cutting
Chinese Paper Cutting or Jianzhi (剪纸) is distinctive visual art of Chinese handicrafts originated from the 6th century. At beginning women used to paste golden and silver foil cuttings onto their hair at the temples, and men used them in sacred rituals. Later, they were used during festivals to decorate gates and windows. After hundreds of years’ development, now they have become a very popular means of decoration among country folks for ceremonial purpose. The art form also spreads to other parts of the world with different regions adopting their own cultural styles.
