About us

The Durham Chinese School (DCS) was originally founded in 1998 by Dr Jinping Du and Dr Wenbin Wei, born from a local community initiative. DCS is an independently run and governed by volunteers from the local community.

From 2002, the school was led by Dr Yan Liu, with support from local organisations like CANER (Chinese Association North East Region) and Durham Sixth Form College. DCS has a successful track record of collaboration and partnerships with local mainstream schools and the education authority. Classes were held at Durham Johnston School until 2012. In September 2012, in its 15th year, the school relocated to its current premises at Elvet Hill House, Durham University, adjacent to Durham Oriental Museum – a partnership that continues to benefit our students and community.

Starting with approximately 10 students in 2002, DCS has grown rapidly over the years, now serving a diverse group of students and families. We provide language classes and interest clubs every Sunday during term time. Our dedicated team includes six language teachers and there were interest clubs like dancing, art, and chess. The school is governed by a management committee of four volunteers and supported by a Parent-Teacher Association with four volunteers.

DCS is committed to providing high-quality Mandarin language and Chinese culture education, helping children achieve outstanding results in nationally recognised examinations. We are believed to be the only organisation in the County Durham area to provide Mandarin teaching for children from five years old. We also contribute by providing teaching resources and know-how and have a track record of attracting external funding for educational and cultural purposes.

In our increasingly interconnected world, proficiency in Chinese language and understanding of Chinese culture offer significant educational, professional, and personal benefits, fostering communication and understanding across cultures. DCS believes that strengthening this education provides valuable skills and cultural understanding that benefit individuals and contributes to the richness of communities in the City and County of Durham and beyond. Our mission is to build bridges through education.

DCS is strictly politically neutral and operates independently of any political or governmental influence. We focus solely on education, cultural exchange, and community development. We are committed to being a safe, welcoming, and non-political space for children and families of all backgrounds. We welcome learners of all school ages, regardless of background or ethnicity, who are interested in learning Chinese or engaging with Chinese culture. Our school community is inclusive and open to everyone.
